1946 – 90 – 100 million weekly admissions

Paradigm Movies: "Best Years of Our Lives" & "Duel in the Sun". Both prototypes blockbusters:

Presold
Top Stars
Excessive Budget
Nationwide promotion and release

1948 - Paramount Decree. Leads to

Majors become distribution companies
Rise of independent producers and agents.

Agents replace studios packaging function.

Mid 1950s - Hollywood makes peace with TV and brings production for television.

1965 "The Sound of Music" generates wave of similar movies – which flop.

Mid-late 1960s - Financially disasterous period sees studios taken over:

Gulf and Western: Paramount

Transamerica: United Artists

Kinney Nat. Services: Warner Brothers

Kirk Kerkorian: MGM

1960s – Also sees television emerge as substantial market for the studios product.

1972 - "The Godfather" revives box office.

1974 – Hollywood’s total earnings surpass postwar peak (1946) for first time.

1975 - 1990s - The New Hollywood

1975 - Jaws establishes modern blockbuster prototype:

saturation booked ("frontloading")

a summer hit
discovers new baby-boomer audience

1978 - Jaws 2 released creating franchise.
