Lectures 2 4 Radio, Television and the Development of Public Service Broadcasting
Account of the establishment of the BBC, 2RN (RTE) and early radio broadcasting in the United States. Comparing and contrasting the experience of state run broadcasting with private regulated broadcasting in the United States. Focus on the development of the (Reithian) concept of Public Service Broadcasting, fears about the power of the medium and need for regulation. Assessment of the cuaes and impact of deregulation in the international television market since the 1980s. A look too at institutional histories of broadcasting in Britain, Ireland and the US from the 1920s to the 1990s.
