Research – start with a concern: tutor isolation Implementation of informed action through web site development that includes a method of posting messages which are threaded etc. to bring about improvement in practice – shared experience, resources, issues of concern; examples of good practice = CoP Add to a body of knowledge CoP – a group of people who share a concern or passion for something and who interact regularly to learn how to do it better. Domain – shared area of interest which in this case is to reduce the sense of isolation Community – membership i.e. registration or viewing site implies a knowledge and commitment to the domain that distinguishes members form other people who work in this area – leads to sharing through discussions etc. This is building a community. Threaded discussions – build a knowledge base Moodle – I kept a reflective journal through which I constructed my own knowledge and could assess my own learning journey. The journal is a personal disclosure that encourages me to understand what I am learning from my experience on the MSc course and in my everyday teaching. It allows me to challenge myself to confront what I see as the negative aspects of online learning – lack of face to face interaction; understanding the concept of ’community’ in an online environment and how I reconcile that with my understanding of ‘community’ in everyday life. I work through my own thoughts on theories and concepts discussed during class meetings, lectures, and informal discussions with group and fellow tutors. It documents instances of my interactions with other people on the course and in my work and how my attitudes change over times. It documents how I feel that a CoP is developing amongst students on the course: mutual engagement; shared repertoire and joint enterprise – the journal helps me understand how I can use this knowledge to develop the web site for my own particular context. Informal learning: Internet allows people to seek out and use resources independently, control the pace of their own learning and talk to and consult others. The web site encourages voluntary collaboration which encourages learning from the perspective of social relationships rather than on the acquisition of specific knowledge. People do not have to openly participate as just opening the web site and reading what is a form of cognitive apprenticeship which can be seen as legitimate peripheral participation in a discussion oriented CoP. Living Educational Theory: Expressing a concern when educational values are not lived in practice – learning through social interaction is not happening for me due to a sense of isolation Imagine a way forward – plan to take action the web site Gather data – Moodle postings; record of meetings with peers and fellow practitioners; site statistics; email correspondence Analyse the data and evaluate practice on effectiveness of actions Modify plans – in this case work on moderation skills to increase levels of collaboration Submit accounts of learning to a validation group Clarifying my own values which I bring to my practice through this research: personal autonomy and choice in learning; learning in a real life context; choice of resources; trust and respect. Living educational theory is context specific but it is knowledge that has been generated through a collaborative dialectical process – open to public scrutiny, scepticism, review and criticism all of which are fundamental elements that must be present to validate the research.
