FARREL CORCORAN MA, PhD - Biography

University experience includes a year in the Middle East and several years in the United States in three different universities, before coming to Dublin City University as Professor of Communication in 1986. Served as Head of the School of Communication and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities for a number of years. Chaired several degree programme boards as the School expanded, and served as Director of the Centre for Society, Information and Media. Holder of a Government of Ireland Senior Research Fellowship. Involved in a number of research projects funded by the European Commission, including multinational COST teams (the Impact of the Internet on Mass Media in Europe; Building a Media Research Agenda for Central and Eastern Europe), and a collaborative study of news flow within the EU: Adequate Information Management in Europe (AIM).

Worked a five-year term as Chairman of Radio Telefis Éireann (RTÉ), the Irish public service broadcaster and played an active role in developing media policy in a number of areas. Consultant to the Irish government on broadcasting policy, and more recently, on tobacco consumption and advertising. Served on the Governing Authority of Dublin City University. Currently on the Board of the Office of Tobacco Control. Serving now on two committees of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) and was a member of the first Council. Former Council member of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) and currently on Board of Advisors of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). Previous journal editorial experience on Javnost/ The Public and Critical Studies in Media and Communication Research. Currently on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Media and Foreign Affairs, and Consulting Editor for the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication.

Research Interests:
Global communication; political communication; international news flow; European media policy and cultural identity; the political economy of broadcasting; media and development; mass communication theory.
