Biographical Details

Niamh Gaynor is an Associate Professor specialising in the politics of inequality and development, citizen participation and democracy, and evolving forms of governance, both formal and informal. She was awarded a first class honours BSc in Botany and Mathematics from UCD in 1992; a first class honours MSc in Rural Development from UCD in 1995; and a PhD in Sociology from NUI Maynooth in 2008. Niamh has worked in DCU since 2008. Previously she worked in international and community development in Africa and Ireland. Niamh’s research specialises in how social and political inequalities come to be produced and reproduced. Her work to date has focused on exploring the conditions under which more marginalised groups and communities wield an influence at local and national levels.

Following an IRC-funded research project on Malawi's PRSP and Ireland's Social Partnership processes in the late 2000s, from 2011 to 2015 Niamh worked on a project on Peacebuilding and Local Governance in Africa's Great Lakes Region. This project was supported by DCU, Trócaire and the RIA and drew on fieldwork conducted in Burundi, the DRC and Rwanda.  Niamh is currently working on two research projects.  One is an ESRC-funded international project on the impact of austerity on local governance in Dublin - see http://www.dmu.ac.uk/ESRCAusterity.  This runs from 2015-2018.  The other is an IRC-funded study of Gender Based Violence in Malawi.  This is in collaboration with ActionAid and the fieldwork was completed in 2016.  Niamh serves on the editorial boards of ‘Policy and Practice - a Development Education Review’ and the ‘Irish Journal of Sociology’. She has also served as reviewer for a wide range of international journals and book publishers.
