Since her appointment in St. Patrick's College as lecturer in Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE) in 2000, Bernie Collins has held posts as Quality Promotion Coordinator (3 years) and Acting Coordinator of the B.Ed. Programme Board (1 year). She teachers on undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, and has supervised Masters' Theses on Healthy Eating, Mindfulness and Childrens' Social and Emotional Development in Irish primary schools.
Bernie completed a Doctorate in Education in NUIM in 2011. Her research focused on the practice of circle time in Irish primary schools and is entitled Empowerment of Children Through Circle Time: An Illumination of Practice. She has also launched primary school classroom materials in February 2016 (Looking Outside the Circle: Circle Time for SPHE Strand Myself and the Wider World).
Bernie was National Coordinator for the Walk Tall Support Service from 1995-2000. During that time she coordinated and contributed to the design and editing of classroom materials for all class levels in primary schools and coordinated the design and delivery of in-career training for whole school staffs and individual teachers in Ireland. Bernie was on the editorial team for the revised Walk Tall Programme, a national programme for imiplementing SPHE, which was published in 2016 (www.pdst.ie/walktall).
Bernie was the consultant team leader in a pilot project on homophobic and transphobic bullying in primary schools which was funded by the Department of Education and Skills (DES) in 2015. This was a partnership with BeLonG To, and the classroom materials were launched in September 2016 (www.belongto.org/primary).
Bernie is also a team member on an exploratory research study of the use of Mindfulness in Irish primary schools.
