Brenda McNally is an Assistant Professor and Researcher with the School of Communications. Her research analyses media and public debates about climate change, specifically how news media (legacy and online/digital media) influence public engagement with energy and low carbon transition. She teaches across a range of media and communications modules including Research Methods, Theories of Communications, Media Audiences and Consumption Studies as well as Cultural Studies. Her doctoral thesis investigated print media representations of the transition to a low carbon future in Ireland and zoned in on how the press discuss public responses to climate change. The study is one of the first to map out trends in news media treatment of carbon reduction activity and critically reflect on the ways media representations act as socio-cultural or political barriers to broader public engagement. The findings were used to develop recommendations for journalism and communications practice about decarbonisation and building transition pathways, which are now a major focus of academic, policy-maker and practitioner interest.
